Roy Cropper (David Neilson) lives a relatively quiet life in Coronation Street for a man who was once convicted by the police of dogging. He's more than pleased with his online Scrabble, his trains and his bat spotting thank you so much. Along came his surprise niece Nina, who turned his world upside down.
There was a frosty start to their relationship because Nina didn't want Roy to mess with her dad's life and treatment, and when he died, she hid from Roy, who had since been left homeless. On paper goth teen Nina and modest coffee bookworm Roy have little in common–but they're about to bond over bats in an unexpected turn of events.
When Carla Connor (Alison King) attempts to get Nina into social life and persuades local youth to invite her to a party, she's shocked when Nina insists she'd prefer to go and see the bat with her uncle.
When Carla speaks to Roy about taking Nina along, the pair find themselves in a derelict building looking for bats, and it turns out they have more in common than they thought.
With Roy taking her under his (bat) wing, will Nina continue to settle down on the street?
